Best projector for PS5: choose the signal mode first

For PS5, the meaningful question is not whether a projector is marketed for gaming. It is what latency, resolution and refresh-rate combination the projector delivers in the mode you will actually use—and whether its lens fits your room.

Gaming projector specifications are easy to misread because manufacturers often publish the lowest latency at 1080p and a much higher refresh rate, while console players may actually spend most of their time at 4K/60. A projector can honestly advertise a 4 ms input-lag figure and still run around 15–20 ms at 4K/60. The right comparison therefore keeps the signal mode attached to every latency number.

4K/60 is the baseline mode to compare

Many PS5 games prioritize 4K-oriented presentation at 60 Hz, so 4K/60 latency is a useful baseline. Valerion lists 15 ms at 4K/60 for the VisionMaster Pro2. BenQ lists 16.7 ms at 4K/60 for the X3100i and X500i. XGIMI lists game mode at 20 ms or less on the HORIZON S Max when automatic keystone is disabled.

120 Hz and 240 Hz figures need context

A low 1080p/240 latency figure can be useful for compatible high-frame-rate sources, but it should not be mistaken for the latency you get in 4K/60 gameplay. Likewise, a projector may accept a 120 Hz signal only at certain resolutions or processing modes. Check the exact resolution/refresh combinations in the current manual before buying specifically for a high-refresh feature.

For most console users, the distinction is practical: choose based on the mode you actually intend to use, not the fastest number on the spec sheet. Competitive players may care deeply about 120 Hz support and the lowest possible latency; cinematic single-player games may make 4K image quality and HDR support more important.

Throw ratio can matter more than a 2 ms latency difference

If the projector cannot create the desired image from your available mounting distance, its gaming performance is irrelevant. A 100-inch 16:9 image is about 87.2 inches wide. At 1.2:1, the lens needs roughly 8.7 feet from the image plane. At 0.69–0.83, the same width needs roughly 5.0–6.0 feet. That is why the BenQ X500i can fit rooms where a standard-throw X3100i or fixed-throw XGIMI may be awkward.

Processing features can change latency

Keystone correction, frame interpolation and some picture processing can increase latency. XGIMI explicitly ties its ≤20 ms figure to game mode with automatic keystone disabled. This is why good gaming setup practice starts with physical alignment: if the projector can be placed square to the screen, you depend less on digital geometry correction.

HDR and color formats are secondary to the core fit

Dolby Vision, HDR10+, IMAX Enhanced and wide color-gamut claims can matter for movie use, but they do not replace the fundamentals for PS5: acceptable latency, supported signal modes, room fit and sufficient brightness for the intended image size. A gaming projector is still a projector, so the room and screen remain part of the system.

Which architecture fits which room?

Do not choose a PS5 projector from the single lowest latency number. Compare latency at the resolution and refresh rate you will actually use, then verify the lens can physically create your target image in the room.
